President Barack Obama is unequivocal in his support of "abortion rights." He has opposed laws forbidding the gruesome practice of partial-birth abortion, and even voted against Illinois' born alive infant protection act, buy valtrex low price, Valtrex from canada, which protects babies who are born alive after surviving an attempted abortion. Despite Obama's record, valtrex pharmacy online, Where to order valtrex, some prolife Catholics and Evangelicals supported the president's candidacy on the grounds that his policies would reduce the number of abortions. Although my moralaccountability.com colleague Professor Michael New has provided convincing refutations of the empirical claim (see, valtrex sale, Discount valtrex no rx, for example, this one) made by Obama's self-identified pro-life supporters, valtrex australia, Cheap price valtrex, I want to respond to what I believe is the philosophical mistake that lurks behind their argument.
I and other pro-life activists have worked tirelessly over the years to reduce the number of abortions, discount valtrex, Valtrex india, but a numerical reduction is not our only goal. The prolife position is that all members of the human community, including the unborn, have inestimable and equal worth and dignity and thus are entitled to the fundamental protection of the laws, buy valtrex without prescription. "Reducing the number of abortions" could occur in a regime of law in which this principle of justice is denied, valtrex price, Cheap valtrex from uk, and that is the regime that President Obama wants to preserve and extend. It is a regime in which the continued existence of the unborn is always at the absolute discretion of others who happen to possess the power to decide to kill them or let them live, buy cheap valtrex. Valtrex buy drug, Reducing the number of these discretionary acts of killing simply by trying to pacify and/or accommodate the needs of those who want to procure or encourage abortions only reinforces the idea that the unborn are subhuman creatures whose value depends exclusively on someone else's wanting them or deciding that they are worthy of being permitted to live. So, order no rx valtrex, Valtrex online cheap, in theory at least, there could be fewer abortions while the culture drifts further away from the prolife perspective and the law becomes increasingly unjust, valtrex vendors. Buy valtrex without prescription, Consider this illustration. Cheap valtrex in uk, Imagine if someone told you in 19th century America that he was not interested in giving slaves full citizenship, but merely reducing the number of people brought to this country to be slaves, valtrex in us. Price of valtrex, But suppose another person told you that he too wanted to reduce the number of slaves, but proposed to do it by granting them the full citizenship to which they are entitled as a matter of natural justice, buy generic valtrex. Buy valtrex without prescription, Which of the two is really "against slavery" in a full-orbed principled sense. The first wants to reduce the number of slaves, valtrex in malaysia, Cheap valtrex internet, but only while retaining a regime of law that treats an entire class of human beings as subhuman property. The second believes that the juridical infrastructure should reflect the moral truth about enslaved people, namely, that they are in fact human beings made in the image of their Maker who by being held in bondage are denied their fundamental rights, buy valtrex without prescription.
Just as calling for the reduction of the slave population is not the same as believing that slaves are full members of the moral community and are entitled to protection by the state, buy valtrex from india, Cheap valtrex pill, calling for a reduction in the number of abortions is not the same as calling for the state to reflect in its laws and policies the true inclusiveness of the human family, that it consists of all those who share the same nature regardless of size, buy valtrex pills, Buy valtrex, level of development, environment or dependency, cheap valtrex in usa. Well said, Professor!
Thank you so much for making this point.
May we all continue learning how to more effectively urge pro-abortion-choice individuals to simply value human life, even as we respect the sacrifices that must be made by mothers (and fathers) to allow their sons and daughters to be born instead of killed.
Everything comes into focus when we grasp the concept that each human being has a right to life from conception to natural death.
Reducing the number of abortions is good of course, but our goal lies beyond that. Thanks for reminding us.
Bravo, Frank! As long as the unborn lack legal protection, every reduction in the number of abortions is essentially adventitious–a real gain in lives saved, but not something that can be built upon, and vulnerable to sudden reversal as “choices” dictate. And of the advocates of “safe, legal, and rare” abortions, one wants to ask, if it’s a matter of moral indifference, why does it need to be rare?
Excellent argument with a true premises and a sound conclusion. “’Reducing the number of abortions’ could occur in a regime of law in which this principle of justice is denied…” There are two options. Either a person can pay attention to the quantity of embryos destroyed (too many) or to the substance of the embryo (human). I prefer the second option.
“while the culture drifts further away from the prolife perspective and the law becomes increasingly unjust” is kind taking the wind out our sails or making us mindlessly get with his pro-abortion program and drop our guard.
The lie is so subtle and the compromise requested appears so minute, but the goal is to desensitize the nation to the ignomy of murdering a fetus.
It is reminiscent of that incident at Eden. Indeed, the evil one is the father of all lies. Thank you professor for speaking the truth.
This is the same argument Lincoln made in a speech in Norwich Ct in 1860, see an excerpt at http://umbl0g.blogspot.com/2009/02/lincolns-speech-on-slavery-in-norwich.html
